OUR “WHY”
Charlene and I would like to take just a moment to personally welcome you to Homes of Heroes!
Charlene and I are firm believers in putting a face with a name, so to that end we would like to provide a little background into Steve and Charlene Winters and our “WHY”. Each one of us, through the course of our lives, are faced with defining moments that mold, shape, and direct our pathways to determine which road we will take. Some of these defining moments are periods of great joy and celebration, while others are surrounded by periods of pain and sorrow. However, in either instance, the hope and desired result is that these events prove to be a means of growth and inspiration for those that are placed along our “road” of life.
Our family comes from, and is, a long line of retired and active duty military members serving both the United States Air Force and United States Navy. During these periods of active duty and reflection upon the impact the generations of service members have had and continue to have on our country and freedoms, it has always brought us back to the remembrance of those members that paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. We found ourselves continually asking the question, “Are we doing enough to remember these true heroes?”. It was this question that gave birth to our “WHY” and the creation of Homes of Heroes. We had a desire and wanted to do more. In our efforts, we have been truly blessed with the gift of getting to know and work with so many families that have lost a loved one while serving our great nation, and Homes of Heroes is for them and ALL the active duty members serving today. Homes of Heroes is not our creation. Rather, we are simply the vessel God has chosen to bring it to life along with so many others, and we have committed our lives to do so.
We could think of no other way to effectively communicate the meaning of our “WHY” than through the words of our youngest son. Our sincere hope and desire is that through his words of encouragement, you too find your “WHY”.

The military preaches the concept of “finding your why”. Meaning that everyday when you put on the uniform, you need to keep in mind why you are the less than 1% of the United States that chooses to serve our great nation. No matter how difficult things may be, I always keep in mind the people that I truly care about and the people that if necessary I would lay my life down for. Your why is the greatest motivator that you could ever receive because it’s what pushes you everyday to be a better version of yourself. This concept is applicable to all aspects of life, not just the armed forces. I encourage you to find your why in everything that you do. What pushes you to get out of bed every morning and take on any obstacle that may be thrown your way? Thank you to everybody that has been so influential in my life and has given me the motivation to serve and protect the greatest nation in the world.
